Description

This small island, surrounded by rock ledges, enjoys gorgeous views of neighboring islands to the northeast and a grand sweep of open ocean to the south. Although not far off shore, it offers the elemental feel of an island much further out to sea, and is a fine place to experience the wildness and beauty of this section of the Maine coast. Green, with one clump of spruce trees in the middle and a small rise to the south, is primarily covered in grassy meadows. The best approach and landing is on the northwest end, where seaweed-covered rocks gradually rise to a cobble beach. Another cobble beach on the northeast side is more exposed to swell, and a funnel of ledge rocks creates breaking waves on shore. Depending on sea conditions, you might not be able to land, so it is important to have an alternate destination in mind. In addition, if you are camping and seas come up overnight, you might have trouble leaving the island.

Visitors to Green are asked to concentrate activities on the rock ledges in order to protect island vegetation. There is ample room on the rocks for relaxing, sunbathing, and cooking. If possible, camp on rock ledges on the north end of the island, or on the grassy northernmost tip of meadow. Please be careful of lichen on some rocky surfaces. Also, please avoid the south end of island in the spring, as groups of seals and pups haul out here.
