Description

This tiny, relatively high island is just east of Bickford Point and is connected to it by a mussel bar at low tide. There is enough soil to support about a dozen trees and a tent platform that offers great view of Wohoa Bay to the south. The platform was replaced in 2013 and now includes a small staircase and boards that are offset to enable tents to be secured with line. The platform can accommodate two small tents, or a maximum of four people.

Sparrow is accessible at low tide but it is steeply sided so expect a scramble to reach the platform. Landing is easiest at mid to high tide and on the north and east sides. Please stay on the ledges or short interior paths to protect lichens and other vegetation, and be careful not to disturb the ospreys and eagles that frequently visit the island.

The island owners may be in residence at a nearby cottage with a red barn on the adjacent shore. They occasionally use the tent platform, so please be prepared to relocate to nearby Daniels Island if you find Sparrow occupied. If possible, call John and Caryl McMurray when you are planning your trip (the phone number at the cottage is 207-271-1610).
