Description
-
Indian River Island is located off the northeast tip of Crowley Island at the northern end of the broad tidal bay forming the mouth of the Indian River. It is a tiny, low-lying island with a thick spruce forest and organic soils. The island sits very close to the mainland and is surrounded by extensive tidal flats, which limits access to the top half of the tide.
Located off the main Trail corridor, visitors must travel a fair distance up the Indian River to reach the island. The river is not well-marked on the charts and often contains murky water that does not
permit observation of the bottom. The best landing is at a small cobble beach on the southwest side.
Indian River Island provides a great place to picnic or stretch during a circumnavigation of Crowley Island. While camping is permitted, the island is best suited for day use. A campsite is not maintained but room can be found for one small tent at the southwest corner if needed. Use care when ascending the bank to prevent undue erosion. Please respect the privacy of nearby residents and protect the fragile island soils by concentrating as much activity as possible on the southern shore.
