Description

The Maine Bureau of Parks & Lands teamed up with the [Maine Coast Heritage Trust](https://www.mcht.org/) to purchase Stevens Island in 2000 in an effort to increase recreational access to downeast coastal islands. This forested 30-acre island west of Great Wass Island off Jonesport was a marvelous choice, as its diverse rock and beach shoreline invites exploration, and its beauty is a rich reward for those who make the trip.

There are two campsites on Stevens and island access is available at two places. The group campsite is accessible by landing on the beaches at the northwest shore of the island. The site there is located in a grassy area and is marked by a small sign. The second access point is in the protected eastward-facing cove at the northeast corner of the island. The campsite near this access point can be found in the trees just north of the cove. A path leaves the eastern campsite and crosses the island, emerging just down the shore from the group site.

There is a large tidal range in this part of the coast, and much of the shoreline of Stevens Island is ringed by a wide zone of seaweed-covered rocks at low tide. The island also features fragile organic soils, so please restrict all foot traffic to the intertidal zone and designated trails. Those taking the time to explore the shoreline will be rewarded with the tide pools, rugged granite boulders and sweeping vistas of this magnificent part of the coast.
