Description

Halifax is part of the [Maine Coastal Islands National Wildlife Refuge](http://www.fws.gov/refuge/maine_coastal_islands/). At the eastern end of the Roque archipelago, this striking island has unusual and fragile plants, many residing in extensive raised bogs. For this reason, the entire interior of the main northeast portion of this island is closed. In this northeastern area, visitors may walk only on the rock and gravel areas of the shoreline.

Visitors may land at the northwest-facing gravel beach or at the south-facing cove. Be careful when navigating or anchoring in the mouth of the southern cove, as there may be dangerous breakers in heavy or changing weather. Camping is allowed only atop the non-vegetated portion of the gravel bar between these areas. Due to winter storm activity in recent years, the site is suitable for only one or two tents. Please do not camp on the sensitive grassy hillside to the south, and remember that permission to camp on Halifax must be obtained in advance from the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service (email teressa_cultrera@fws.gov for reservations). Please, no fires.

Visitors may ascend the path on the southwest hill, which offers a stunning view. Refuge managers are monitoring the impact of foot travel here, so please tread carefully.
