Description
With its windblown character and sweeping ocean views, Ram Island is a true downeast gem. Situated at the southwest edge of Machias Bay, the island is covered by gently rolling meadow and rimmed by rugged ledge interspersed with pocket beaches. A protruding granite arm acts as a natural shield against southeast wind and swells, but otherwise the island is quite exposed making it an exciting destination for experienced small boaters.
A northwest-facing cobble beach and southwest-facing cove provide good, all-tide landings. Camping is permitted on the tent platform which sits atop a bluff just north of the southwest-facing cove. Visitors may also tent in the grassy area at the north end of the island which offers some protection from the elements but limited flat ground for camping. There are no maintained walking trails on Ram Island, but it is easy to traverse the island through the meadow.
A local farmer grazes sheep on Ram and several other nearby islands. Visitors to Ram are likely to encounter the sheep on the beaches, in the meadow or in the camping areas. Please stay away from them. While naturally curious, sheep are also easily stressed and may behave erratically if they feel threatened. Because of the sheep, please leave dogs at home.
After several years on the open market, Ram Island was acquired by [Maine Coast Heritage Trust](https://www.mcht.org/) in the summer of 2016 with the help of a handful of island enthusiasts who pooled resources to support its conservation. Thanks to the combined effort of these passionate individuals and MCHT, Ram Island will remain in its largely wild and undisturbed state forever.
