Description

Situated between Tibbett Narrows and Moose Neck is Tibbett Island, a 23-acre [Downeast Coastal Conservancy](https://downeastcoastalconservancy.org/) preserve that is open for both day use and camping. The proximity of the island to shore and to nearby launches (it is only 600 feet from the Moose Neck public beach) make it a good destination when fog, wind or seas prevent longer trips. A curved gravel beach on the north side of the island provides an excellent landing option at nearly all tides.

A walking trail extends from the north gravel beach to the south shore of the island. The trail passes through the forested interior and leads to a southern meadow that offers sweeping views of open waters and nearby offshore islands. The campsite is located just to the left of the walking trail after you pass the entrance sign. There is a picnic table and small pit toilet at the site but if you wish to have a campfire, please do so below the high tide line on the north beach.

Tibbett was used for year-round sheep pasture in the early part of the 20th century. Since that time the open fields have given way to forest, and most of the island is tree-covered today. A single species, white spruce, dominates the northwest end of the island while the northeastern portion contains a mix of spruce, balsam fir, green alder and various shrubs. The non-forested areas harbor species such as goldenrod and New York aster as well as a variety of berries including lowbush blueberry, dewberry, gooseberry, black crowberry and cranberry. Handpicking of berries is permitted but please remember to leave plenty for wildlife and for other visitors.
