Description
Cat Island is located at the entrance to Schooner Cove at the southeastern end of Leighton Neck. From here you can hear the gurgling of the falls, which are less than a mile away. Boaters should be prepared for strong currents, rips and eddies in the waters around Cat Island, particularly in the vicinity of Falls Island and in the narrows between Denbow Neck and Leighton Point.
Camping is permitted in a small clearing in the trees on the northern half of the island. There is room for up to three tents in the grassy patch amidst the mid-sized oak and spruce trees. A crescent-shaped pebble beach on the northeast side of the island offers a good landing option near the campsite. A rudimentary set of rock steps leads from the beach to the camping area. There is deep water access at all tides to a small grassy meadow on the south point of the island. At low water, this point connects to a tiny tree-covered hub directly to the south of the island.
