Description

Well-known and well-loved, Witch Island sits in the northwest corner of Johns Bay at the eastern entrance to The Gut that splits Rutherford Island from mainland South Bristol. Also known as Davis Island, this 18-acre [Coastal Rivers Conservation Trust](https://www.coastalrivers.org/) preserve has an active eagle nest on the western shore. Please give the nest a wide berth and avoid visiting prior to July 1 to protect the eagles.

Witch is located in a busy boating area and near a popular harbor. There is excellent anchoring to the west of the island with solid mud holding ground. The island was formerly a [Maine Audubon](http://maineaudubon.org/) wildlife sanctuary before ownership was transferred to Coastal Rivers. Staff and apprentices from the nearby Carpenters Boat Shop have helped steward the island.

Densely forested with a healthy hardwood population, Witch includes a wonderful perimeter hiking trail that passes through groves of oak and pine. The best landing is in the northeast cove, where a small set of stairs leads to the hiking trail. There is a cabin on the southwest portion of the island, just above the larger south-facing cove. The cabin is not open for use, and the water in the nearby well is untreated.

Local legend has it that the name Witch Island comes from the last person to ever inhabit the island. A woman who had a successful career in New York City as a financial consultant retired to the island to enjoy the quiet life on Johns Bay. Known as the Witch of Wall Street, she had a knack for foretelling the financial futures of others. She lived alone in her small cabin until one day in the late 19th century when she was found dead by nearby residents. Some believe her ghost still haunts the island.
