Description

State-owned Sumac Island lies at the southeast corner of Carrying Place Cove on the western shore of Moose Island. Though its footprint is small, Sumac offers visitors a pleasant camping option in eastern Cobscook Bay with elevated views of Shackford Head and the surrounding islands. There is room for just one tent in the cozy campsite tucked in among the trees. The grass-topped rocks rimming the island provide good spots for eating or just taking in the view.

Sumac is best accessed from the northeast side via the gravel bar connecting it to Mathews Island. Landing at low tide requires a long scramble over seaweed covered rocks to reach the campsite and the dry ledges fringing the island. The massive tides here result in a markedly different island profile at high and low tides. Nearby Goose and Spectacle islands are important seabird nesting sites. Please view wildlife from a distance and give these islands a wide berth when passing by.
