Description
The Wells Reserve at Laudholm is a delightful place to visit while exploring the southern coast by boat. This National Estuarine Research Reserve is open daily from 7 am to sunset and includes nearly 7 miles of walking trails that wind through forests and fields, past salt marshes, and around an historic farm complex.
The best way to access the Reserve by water is to land at Laudholm Beach, a public sand beach backed by several private homes just west of the Little River. Note: this is an exposed beach and even a small swell can make for a difficult surf landing. Only experienced boaters should attempt to land here. Please use caution when landing and be mindful of nearby beach goers, surfers and swimmers.
To reach the trails, take the wooden stairway immediately to the east of the last residence, which is fronted by a concrete wall with rock rip rap. Hand carry boats may be placed alongside the stairway and boardwalk, out of the way of pedestrians, and tied to the wooden supports for safety. Beyond the dock, stay straight on the dirt road to reach the Reserve entrance. While exploring the Reserve, please remain on the trails. Smoking and pets are not permitted on the property.
Sections of Laudholm Beach provide nesting habitat for endangered shorebirds and caution should be taken not to disturb them. [Trail maps](http://www.wellsreserve.org/visit/trail_system) for the Reserve and additional information about its many research, education and stewardship programs can be found online or at the visitor center in the old farmhouse.
