Description

Although it sits on the doorstep of one of the most popular sand beach stretches in southern Maine, Eagle Island feels wild and remote. It is the northernmost outpost among the cluster of islands that marks the entrance to the Saco River, just northwest of Biddeford Pool.

As its name implies, Eagle Island is used extensively by birds, particularly gulls and other seabirds that nest in the scrub brush that defines the upland area. Because it is a seabird nesting place, visitors are asked to steer clear until after July 1.

The combination of exposed shoreline, ocean swells and current from the mouth of the Saco River makes landing on Eagle a challenge on all but calm days. The best approach is from the west, but beware of reefs that extend from the southwest tip of the island to a distant ledge.

Visitors are welcome on Eagle but are asked to avoid trampling vegetation by staying on the shoreline and on durable surfaces while exploring the island. The gravel beach that rims the southwest corner makes for a fine picnic spot. There is a small campsite accessed by a short trail above the gravel beach with room for up to two 2-person tents. Campers should be aware of noisy gulls and mindful of chicks if visiting in July.

The Saco Yacht Club, which owns the island, asks simply that people treat the island with respect and leave no trace of their visit.
