Description
Boasting a dramatic coastline and unsurpassed views, Damariscove is one of the finest gems of the [Boothbay Region Land Trust](https://bbrlt.org/) (BRLT). Located 5 miles offshore, the island has a rich and fascinating history, including being home to one of the earliest commercial fishing settlements in Maine. The island was donated to the Nature Conservancy in 1966, who later transferred ownership to BRLT but maintained a conservation easement on the island.
Given its exposed nature, paddlers wanting to visit should be sure of marine conditions and their own limitations, and allow ample time for the return journey as overnight use is not permitted. The only suitable landing is in the harbor at the southern end of the island. All boaters should use caution when navigating around the southwestern tip, an area known as The Motions. Paddlers may land at the beach at the head of the harbor, and a dock is available for larger boats. Please do not use the stone pier, which is reserved for commercial fishermen who operate out of the harbor. The dock is for loading and unloading only. BRLT maintains two guest moorings and courtesy dinghies. The island is a popular destination, so the moorings are often in use and boaters should be confident in their anchoring.
A kiosk near the dock has trail maps and is short walk from the "cleanest outhouse on the Midcoast". A small museum at the head of the cove features the cultural and natural history of Damariscove. You may meet BRLT caretakers who reside on the island from mid-June to September. Please respect the privacy of their cabin and surrounding buildings, which are not open for use. The Coast Guard Lifesaving Station on the southwest tip is privately owned, please steer clear while exploring the island.
