Description

At the northern end of Ebenecook Harbor and not far from downtown Boothbay Harbor, Indiantown makes a great day trip destination for those seeking to stretch their legs while exploring wooded trails. The island has an extensive history of Native American use as evidenced by artifacts found during an archaeological dig in the late 1990s. Extensive shell middens were excavated as well as centuries old remains indicating that the island had been an important base for fishermen during the colonial period. The island was also used for farming in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Over the years there were occasional schemes for building a bridge to Indiantown from the mainland and creating a seasonal development. Fortunately in 1995 an anonymous donor and other supporters made it possible for the [Boothbay Region Land Trust](https://bbrlt.org/) (BRLT) to acquire the northern 27 acres. BRLT was also granted an easement over the remaining 33 acres that ensures its protection from development.

BRLT maintains a guest mooring and dock at the northwest tip of the island, not to be confused with the private dock at the southwestern end. Paddlers may tie up to the BRLT float, but other small boaters should utilize the mooring and courtesy dinghy, leaving the float free for others. There is a BRLT kiosk with trail maps welcoming you to the island. Visitors may explore the loop trail, but please respect the privacy of the owners of the southern half of the island and do not stray from the trails.
