Description
George Head Island is a magical place, and MITA is thrilled that the owners have chosen to share their property with respectful visitors when it is not in use by one of the co-owning families. **Before going ashore for day use or camping, all visitors should check the [online calendar](https://mita.org/blackoutdates/) to verify that the island is open for use on those dates. If the calendar indicates that the island is closed, please choose an alternate destination.**
A pair of sandbars extends from the eastern side of George Head Island like antennae. The northeast bar is the best landing spot at all tides, however at lower tides the water between the bars is quite shallow so landing farther down the bar may be necessary. Boaters should be careful when navigating the narrow channel that separates this sandbar and St Helena at low tide. Those exploring the sandbars are advised to be mindful of the tide cycle to avoid getting stranded.
Overnight visitors will find two spacious camping options on George Head. One is in the tree grove just inland from the northeast sandbar, and a second is in the southeast meadow overlooking the bar to Little George Head Island. Both sites can accommodate several tents. There is a fire ring at the base of the northeast bar where small fires are allowed. Please burn only downed wood or driftwood gathered from the island. The owners sometimes store supplies and other items on the island. Please do not disturb anything that you find.
