Description

Finding a beautiful sand beach on a coastal Maine island is often the exception rather than the rule, but this is one of the many exceptional attributes of Sheep Island. Its distinct shape also sets it apart from other islands nearby. Narrow and mostly low-lying, Sheep is marked by clusters of trees at each end that thin to a meadow at its center. A [Downeast Coastal Conservancy (DCC)](https://downeastcoastalconservancy.org/) sign on the north side welcomes visitors ashore.

Located only a quarter mile from the mainland, Sheep Island is reasonably accessible for boaters of all stripes. An inviting sand beach on the north shore of the island provides an excellent place to land and enjoy the stunning scenery of Pleasant Bay. Landing is also possible on the south shore for those willing to negotiate the rocks and muddy areas that guard the southern approach. Please avoid the area immediately surrounding the active Osprey nest on the Northwest corner of the island so as not to agitate the birds.

Sheep Island is beloved by local community members, many of whom have used the island for generations for family outings and picnics. When the island went up for sale in 2014, concerned residents teamed up with DCC to acquire the island and safeguard public access to this important recreational resource. Thanks to an outpouring of community support and swift action on the part of the land trust, future generations will be able to enjoy Sheep Island long into the future.

Camping is allowed on Sheep Island in the established campsite just upland from eastern edge of the north beach. The campsite contains an approved fire ring, a privy, and a picnic table that was installed by DCC volunteers. All visitors to Sheep are asked to practice responsible recreation and follow Leave No Trace principles while visiting.
