Description
Herons Rip at Dickinsons is not an island in the traditional sense, but thanks to its remoteness and stunning beauty, visitors here can have an island-like experience in a peaceful and serene mainland setting. Located three nautical miles up Little Kennebec Bay, this property is a quiet, sheltered alternative to the more exposed Trail sites nearby.
Consisting of more than 500 acres surrounding Mill Pond, the area known colloquially as Dickensons Reach is the former homestead of William Coperthwaite, pioneer of yurt building and champion for simple living. The ecologically rich land includes a network of trails and three modest homesteads but no interior roads. Coperthwaite's yurt village is at the southwest corner of Mill Pond and its caretakers or artists in residence are often on site. Please respect their privacy and limit quiet exploration to the surrounding grounds. For more information, visit [In Search of Simplicity.](http://www.insearchofsimplicity.net)
This property is now owned by five families including that of conservationist Peter Forbes. He generously offers his 10-acre parcel, Herons Rip, as a basecamp for visitors interested in exploring the pond and surrounding property. His parcel is located on the peninsula that forms the northern edge of Mill Pond immediately east of the tide rip. Landing is possible on either side of the rip at high tide, but at low tide only the north landing is accessible. Trails lead from both landings to several
small tent platforms where camping is permitted. A beautiful open air pavilion and cob cook oven, hand built by volunteers in 2021, is located just up the hill from the tent platforms. With no doors, no locks and no walls, this structure is meant to serve as a gathering place and is open for respectful use to all who visit. A freshwater well and composting toilet are also available on site.
The Dickinsons Reach property is protected by a conservation easement held by Maine Coast Heritage Trust. This land was cherished by Mr. Coperthwaite and it remains a place of deep significance to its present owners and their guests. Because this special place is shared by several different communities, it is requested that you call ahead to camp.
